I love summer. I love fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden or local Farmer’s Market. But it never fails, the day I bring home fresh peaches (its always peaches… why is that?) our kitchen is filled with annoying little knats swarming the peaches and anything else they can get to that’s not in a package or locked up in the fridge. Enough was enough the other day and I HAD to do something.
Here’s what Pinterest promises:
Natural Gnat Killer What you will need: 1 small jar or bowl 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar 2 tbs water 1 drop of mild liquid dish washing detergent such as Dawn. Instuctions: Pour apple cider vinegar into the jar/bowl. Add water then add just one drop of mild liquid dish detergent. Set the mixture in the area where gnats are a problem.
Here’s what I did:
I poured apple cider vinegar, 2 splashes of water, and a gentle squeeze of Dawn (although we only had the Olay Hand Renewal Dawn). I set the bowl on the counter next to the bananas and walked away.
As I checked on it over the next hour, I noticed all the knats sitting on the edge of the bowl, but nothing was in the liquid so I gave up and left it alone. When dinner time came around, I checked on it again (several hours later) and found about 20 dead knats sunk to the bottom.
Totally gross, but YAY! So I dumped it out, refilled with fresh mixture and left it alone until morning… and another 20 something dead knats. 40 seemed like quite a lot so I wonder if the sweet smell (or nasty vinegar smell) didn’t attract “new” knats.
But it worked… enough to cut down so I don’t have to wave my hand in front of my face before reaching into the cupboard or using the countertop.
Am I the only one with a knat problem?
